Point of sale (POS) or checkout is the location where a transaction occurs. A “checkout” refers to a POS terminal or more generally to the hardware and software used for checkouts, the equivalent of an electronic cash register.

A POS terminal manages the selling process by a salesperson accessible interface. The same system allows the creation and printing of the receipt.

A place where sales are made. On a macro-level, a point of purchase may be a mall, market or city. On a micro-level, retailers consider a point of purchase to be the area surrounding the counter where customers pay. Also known as “point of sale”.

value stream mapping

Value stream mapping is a lean manufacturing technique used to analyze the flow of materials and information currently required to bring a product or service to a consumer. At Toyota, where the technique originated, it is known as “material and information flow mapping”.[1] It can be used in any process that needs an improvement.

Value Stream Mapping Symbols

Customer/Supplier

This icon represents the Supplier when in the upper left, the usual starting point for material flow. The customer is represented when placed in the upper right, the usual end point for material flow.

Dedicated Process

This icon is a process, operation, machine or department, through which material flows. Typically, to avoid unwieldy mapping of every single processing step, it represents one department with a continuous, internal fixed flow path.

In the case of assembly with several connected workstations, even if some WIP inventory accumulates between machines (or stations), the entire line would show as a single box. If there are separate operations, where one is disconnected from the next, inventory between and batch transfers, then use multiple boxes.

Shared Process
This is a process operation, department or workcenter that other value stream families share. Estimate the number of operators required for the Value Stream being mapped, not the number of operators required for processing all products.

Data Box

This icon goes under other icons that have significant information/data required for analyzing and observing the system. Typical information placed in a Data Box underneath FACTORY icons is the frequency of shipping during any shift, material handling information, transfer batch size, demand quantity per period, etc.

Typical information in a Data Box underneath MANUFACTURING PROCESS icons: C/T (Cycle Time) – time (in seconds) that elapses between one part coming off the process to the next part coming off, C/O (Changeover Time) – time to switch from producing one product on the process to another Uptime- percentage time that the machine is available for processing EPE (a measure of production rate/s) – Acronym stands for “Every Part Every___”. Number of operators – use OPERATOR icon inside process boxes Number of product variations Available Capacity Scrap rate Transfer batch size (based on process batch size and material transfer rate)

Workcell

This symbol indicates that multiple processes are integrated in a manufacturing workcell. such cells usually process a limited family of similar products or a single product. Product moves from process step to process step in small batches or single pieces.

Free value stream mapping examples

Discovering the benefits of Value stream mapping can be a real eye opener – it’s a superb process for highlighting information and material bottlenecks within an organization.

For the uninitiated VSM is a process mapping concept that looks at mapping the material and information flows within an organization – it brings together process steps – data (such as inventory and lead times) and takt time.

However if you’ve not done any Value Stream Mapping before it can appear really daunting – and this is where looking at some examples can really be of benefit –

Firstly there are plenty of excellent books available which will take you uncover what Value Stream Mapping can do for your organization for starters be sure to check out the excellent Learning to see Value Stream Mapping to add value and reduce Muda by Mike Rother

Luckily the internet is also full of examples that can point you in the direction of what a finished value stream map should contain and how best to produce one – here’s some examples that should start you on your way!

Conventional Trucker

Conventional trucker hauls goods that are in loose form or unitized by pallets but not pre-stowed in containers. Sometimes, the loading and unloading of unpalletized goods on conventional trucks may be carried by the truck driver or his assistant.

Types of Goods

Any goods can be transported by conventional trucks so long as they are not overweight (more than 12 tonnes per piece), overheight (not specific but to the extent where it does not pose stability problem for the trucks during transportation and is able to pass under structures along its route), overwidth (cargo extend beyond the sides of the vehicle thus causing danger to other road users.

Goods are mainly dry and if liquid or in grain form, they should be placed in containers designed for the purpose i.e. drums for liquid or bags for solid grains, conventional goods maybe normal or bonded.

Normal goods are transported without special requirements regarding the security and the documentation (customs approval). Bonded goods must be transported only in accordance with the rules and conditions laid down by the Royal Malaysian Customs.

Equipment

Conventional Trucks

Conventional trucks are vehicles with equipment on which cargo can be transported. The trucks are usually with wooden flat bed chassis with detachable or fordable side guards. There are also facilities to cover the goods with water proof material and this may use detachable skeletal structures to raise the roof height safely and securely.

Bonded Trucks

Bonded trucks are vehicles that has been approved by the Royal Malaysian Customs to haul cargo that is still under the customs jurisdiction (duty unpaid or those moving between customs control areas or warehouses). The requirement for such trucks is to ensure that the cargo can be secured and sealed by a customs seal which can only be dismantle by the customs officer authorized to do so at the destination point.

Organization

Conventional trucking companies range from a one man operator owning one truck to a public listed company with a hundred or more trucks.

There is no limit to the type and size of the company. However the Lembaga Perlesenan Kenderaan Perdagangan (LPKP) still holds the final decision on whether the company or person can operate for a given route or otherwise.

Hauliers and Hirers’ Responsibilities

As haulage operators, the responsibilities of the company are as follows:

  • To accept the request of transport and to ensure all relevant documents, payments, releases and approvals have been obtained.
  • To collect the container from where it is stored (port or depot) and deliver it to the address or destination according to the time stipulated by the hirer.
  • If no date or time is stipulated, the haulier may have it delivered within 48 hours.
  • To ensure the safety of the cargo and container during custody by haulier, his employee or agent assigned.

Responsibilities of hirer, user or cargo owners:

  • Responsibilities of either party is stated in the Conditions of Carriage and Tariff usually issued by a haulage operator, which is made available on request by the user or his agent.
  • To receive the cargo in good order, check, seals and accept.
  • To unstuff the container or unload the cargo as soon as possible and if possible within contractual period of 2 hours.
  • To inform the haulier about the readiness of the container for collection.

The requirement to be a container haulier, based on practice are:

  • Financially sound and strong to invest in capital equipment such as prime mover, trailers, depots, workshops and other requirements.
  • Willing to operate around the clock – 24 hours a day for 365 days a year.
  • Equipment used by a container haulier are mainly prime movers and trailers. These equipments must meet specific minimum standards for safe and secure haulage of laden containers.
  • These equipment are to be inspected and approved by the Road Transport Department. These approvals today, are based on the inspection reports conduct by Pusat Pemeriksaan Kenderaan Berkomputer (Puspakom), the privatized vehicle inspection company appointed by the government.

Haulier’s Organization

Container transportation is currently operated by large companies with investment capitals of not less than $10 million. Most companies invest $5 to $20 million more annually on equipment replacement, maintenance and other additions.

Because of this, container haulage companies have to be financially strong and they are usually backed by bigger companies and even public funds. Apart from investment on haulage equipment, maintenance, the container haulage companies also have to invest on depots to part their equipment, repair workshops, staging areas and operations and administrative offices.

Operations

The haulage of containers begins with the request of transport from the cargo owners or their agents to the container haulage operator. The requirements for requests for transport are as follows:

  • Container/goods have been released by customs which mean they have been submitted for customs duty evaluation and have been cleared.
  • The shipping agent on behalf of their principals has also released the delivery order (DO) which is usually done after the freight has been duly paid.
  • The agent concerned prepares a delivery note and submits that with the relevant payment to the haulage company of their choice. This process is being carried out electronically.
  • Usually agents on behalf of their principals indicate the preferred delivery date and time of the containers
  • Upon receipt of the request for transport, the haulage operators plans the delivery date and time. This can be anywhere between 2 hours to several days depending on the requirements of the cargo owners as well as the availability of equipment and capacity of the hauliers themselves.
  • The haulier then submits a request to container terminal operators (Klang Container Terminal – Port Klang; Penang Port Sdn Bhd – Penang; Johor Port Container Terminal – Pasir Gudang; Port of Tanjong Pelepas – Johor). Containers are loaded onto trailers within the Port’s container interchange areas. The loaded containers are then hauled to the designated address.

Upon arrival the procedures are normally as follows:

  • Drivers report to the security at the gate.
  • Containers are parked at places designated by the owners.
  • Owners or his agent will check the container seal to determine it is still intact (for imports) or check the conditions of the container in term in terms of cleanliness and other requirements (if for export stuffing).
  • The delivery note or consignment note is signed by the owners.
  • The driver may haul back and ready container if available in the same premises.
  • If delivery is at night, it is expected that the security personnel should undertake the receipt of containers and sign the documents related to such receipts.
  • Under normal circumstances, the receiver of the goods is expected to unstuff or stuff (or unload or load) the goods from the containers within two hours. He will then inform the haulage company that the containers are ready for collection.
  • The haulage company will then assign a prime mover to haul the trailer with the ready container on it. This may be done in several ways – if there is a container to be delivered to the same premises, the same prime mover may collect the ready container after discharging the earlier one. If there is no container to be send to the same premises, the prime mover delivering to the nearest site to the premises may be assigned to collect the ready container. If there is no prime mover delivering containers to the vicinity, then a prime mover delivering from another area may be assigned to collect the ready container.

Finally, a prime mover only will be dispatched to collect the ready container at the haulage company’s cost.

Container Haulage Service

In Malaysia, container haulier is a regulated service. Only companies obtaining specific approval from the Council of Ministers may operate the container haulage service. The power of the Minister under the Road Transport Act to approve permits and license for container haulage operators are controlled by the Council of Ministers.

Today, they are few well known container hauliers namely: Kontena Nasional , MISC Haulage, Diperdana, PKT Logistics, LTS Logistics and Multi Modal.

Types of Goods

Almost all kinds of cargoes can be transported by containers. These include bulk and liquids. However, consideration on whether to use containers or other forms of transport usually depends on the final cost benefit of the choice.

Bulk cargo for example is more economical if transported by specialized bulk carriers. However, the greatest advantage of containerizing goods for transport is in unitizing the goods i.e. instead of transporting loose packages which can be stolen, dropped or damaged, goods are transported as a whole unit in a form of container itself.

That is why the container transport industry, reference is made on the containers instead of the goods itself.

Equipment
Container haulage equipment comes in two parts. The prime mover, as the main suggests is the motive power for hauling the loads, it is also called the head.

Containers are actually loaded onto trailers which are coupled to the prime movers. The practice of multiple delivery operations necessitates that haulage companies equip a ratio of several trailers for each prime movers.

Trailers are equipment used onto which containers are loaded for transportation. Trailers are mainly sketal or flat-bed structure. Trailers usually come in two basic lengths, being the length of containers i.e. 20 feet and 40 feet. Although 45 feet, 53 feet and 60 feet are already available elsewhere in developed countries, they are not encourage in Malaysia due to the current infrastructure.

Before equipment can be used on the roads, they have to be approved by the relevant authorities here.
